Many women who come to Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa want soft and hair-free legs, armpits, faces, and bikini lines, while men often seek hair removal options for the chest and back. If you’re searching for an easier, more affordable method for getting rid of unwanted hair, consider waxing. Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa provides this hair removal treatment that involves stripping away hairs at their roots for patients from Bryn Mawr, Newtown Square, Main Line, and the Philadelphia area.
Waxing is a popular technique that offers many advantages over traditional, at-home options for hair removal, such as shaving. To avoid burning or tearing your skin while waxing, it’s always better to book an in-office treatment with an experienced professional instead of trying it at home.

How Does Hair Removal with Waxing Work?
Waxing consists of hair removal from the root. Our entire bodies are covered with a fine layer of hairs that grow out of tunnel-shaped structures, called follicles. These hairs receive nutrients and oxygen from the follicles through their roots.
To remove unwanted hairs, an adhesive substance—such as wax—is applied to the skin. A cloth or paper strip is then used to quickly remove the substance, also bringing along the hairs stuck to it. Significant amounts of hair can be removed in the same session with this method.
There are two different types of wax: hard wax and soft wax. Hard wax is most suited for sensitive areas of skin, such as the face and bikini line, because it adheres to the hairs without harming the skin. Soft wax is thinner and sticks to both the skin and hair, so it can cause a greater level of discomfort, but is ideal for use on larger areas, such as the legs and back.
What to Know Before Hair Removal with Waxing
Patients who are new to waxing should remember that coming in with the right hair length is important for maximizing results, so it’s best to let unwanted hair grow out to at least one-eighth of an inch before the treatment.
Patients should avoid applying retinol products to their face for one to two weeks before waxing because these products will make skin sensitivity, redness, and irritation more likely. Moisturize to ensure that your skin is hydrated before waxing so that hairs are less likely to break, and exfoliate to avoid ingrown hairs.
Results from Waxing
The results from this hair removal treatment last anywhere from three to four weeks, since hairs are removed from their roots instead of at the surface. This is much longer than shaving, which provides results that may only last for a few days. Waxing also exfoliates your skin, making it feel smoother and softer. Patients are less likely to have itching, razor burn, or ingrown hairs. However, they may still experience ingrown hairs, red bumps, and minor bleeding as side effects of waxing. Since waxing makes your skin more sensitive, it’s important to wear sunscreen when out in the sun.
How Many Waxing Sessions Are Required?
Timing is an important factor in waxing, especially if you’re planning ahead for a specific occasion. It’s best to book waxing sessions in three- to five-week intervals throughout the year, even during the colder months, to maintain smooth results. With routine waxing, some of the follicles scar down and will no longer be able to produce a new hair. This results in fewer hairs.

Are There Other Options Available for Hair Removal?
Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa also provides laser hair removal as an alternative to standard hair removal methods. The laser energy is absorbed by pigmented cells in the hair follicles, damaging them and preventing the proper re-growth of new hairs. This hair removal can be used almost anywhere on the face and body and results in lasting reduction of hair.
