- Microneedling with Genius™ RF and SkinPen®
Collagen is a vital element for healthy, young-looking skin. The problem is, as we get older, collagen production decreases. Starting at age twenty, the body makes approximately one percent less collagen with each passing year, leading to the development of lines and volume loss. An effective way to generate new collagen and address these changes is with microneedling at Bryn Mawr’s Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa using the SkinPen® and Genius™ RF devices.
Improve the health and appearance of your skin with SkinPen® and Genius™ RF microneedling for Bryn Mawr. Schedule a consultation with our certified aesthetic dermatology providers to learn more. Please BOOK ONLINE, call 610.525.5029, or Contact Us
How Does Traditional Microneedling Compare to RF Microneedling?
Microneedling
The human body is very efficient when it comes to wound healing. Microneedling, which is often referred to as collagen induction therapy, is a non-surgical technique that creates tiny channels in the skin with fine needles to prompt natural repairs that can address specific concerns—like wrinkles or acne scars—as well as improve general issues, like dullness or texture irregularities.
At Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa, we use SkinPen®-a medical-grade, FDA-cleared microneedling device that offers greater precision, safety, and consistency compared to manual microneedling tools. SkinPen® utilizes small needles located on a pen-shaped medical device to produce microscopic wounds in the skin. These tiny wounds heal rapidly, leaving no scars. During the healing process, the surrounding untreated skin also improves in quality. Patients may experience a slight burning or tingling sensation during microneedling with SkinPen®, but there is little to no discomfort. We apply a topical numbing cream before this cosmetic dermatology treatment to minimize discomfort, use cold blowing air during the treatment, and apply cold water compresses and/or ice packs after.

RF Microneedling
Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling boosts the results of traditional collagen induction therapy, providing lasting and dramatic results. It penetrates deeper into the dermis and combines the physical micro-injuries with radiofrequency energy.
We provide Genius™ RF, an advanced device that uses insulated, gold-plated micro-needles and a patented 3-dimensional wrinkle reduction technology system to deliver focused, high-intensity RF energy deep into the dermis, in addition to creating channels. The combination of heat generated by the RF energy and the micro-injuries created by the needles increases the production of collagen to create tighter, more robust, and noticeably youthful skin.
Genius™ RF skin therapy is highly effective for skin tightening, deeper wrinkles, and more pronounced scars. The wound-healing process generated by collagen induction therapy also results in increased elastin production and blood flow as the skin repairs itself and restores the dermal layer.
Genius™ RF microneedling targets specific depths of the skin with precision, leaving the surface untouched, resulting in a faster, more comfortable recovery with minimal risk. As the top layer of skin is protected, it is safe for all skin types.

What Can Collagen Induction Therapy Treat?
SkinPen® Microneedling
The pen-shaped SkinPen® microneedling device is typically used on the face (including the delicate, thin area around the eyes), neck, chest, and scalp. Collagen induction therapy is good for addressing many skin concerns, including wrinkles, sun damage, fine lines, loose skin, acne scars and other scars, skin discoloration, sallow skin, enlarged pores, texture irregularities, and even stretch marks on the body. Traditional microneedling can also be used in combination with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or exosomes to promote hair restoration, minimize stretch marks, or further enhance the quality of the skin.

The Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa team offers microneedling for Bryn Mawr, Newtown Square, and the Philadelphia area as an effective treatment for numerous cosmetic problems, including fine lines, large pores, acne scarring, stretch marks, skin discoloration, bodily scars, and skin texture issues.
The Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa team offers microneedling for Bryn Mawr as an effective treatment for numerous cosmetic problems, including fine lines, large pores, acne scarring, stretch marks, skin discoloration, bodily scars, and skin texture issues.
The channels created by microneedling allow topical skincare products to more easily penetrate into the skin. This technique helps to further increase collagen production and thus, skin thickness.
Patients who choose microneedling for scars, texture irregularities, and overall skin rejuvenation enjoy natural-looking, long-term results. The improvement continues for weeks following a treatment as collagen levels continue to rise. Treatments can be repeated every four to six weeks until the desired results are achieved, and we recommend maintaining a customized, topical skincare routine at home between your sessions.
Genius™ RF Microneedling
The Genius™ RF device is FDA-approved for use on the face and is also used safely on the neck and other body areas. Most skin types can be treated effectively. Many refer to Genius™ RF treatment as a “non-invasive face and neck lift,” as it lifts and tightens the skin well.
RF microneedling with Genius™ can significantly improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (it’s a game changer for upper lip lines); scars due to previous acne, surgery, or trauma; uneven skin texture and tone; sallow and dull skin; lax and sagging skin; stretch marks; and enlarged pores. It is ideal for overall skin rejuvenation and helps to restore firmness and elasticity.
While many patients notice improvement after just one Genius™ RF microneedling session, we recommend a series of treatments. Three to six treatment sessions spaced four weeks apart are usually recommended for optimal results. The beneficial effects continue to improve for up to three months after the last treatment.
All skin types can enjoy microneedling benefits, but the Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology team cautions that these treatments aren’t suitable for everyone and may worsen symptoms of eczema, rosacea, and active acne. Microneedling can also irritate sensitive skin, so it is not recommended for people who have sunburn, infections, or wound healing problems. We do not recommend microneedling for patients who are pregnant, have certain skin disorders, a history of poor wound healing or hypertrophic or keloid scar formation, skin allergies to metals or local anesthetics, a history of cancer, or other poorly controlled medical conditions that could impact healing. You should not consider RF microneedling if you have metal implants or an implantable medical device.
Note that microneedling treatments will not completely address certain signs of aging, such as excessive sagging, expression lines, and loss of underlying volume in the skin. These concerns may need to be treated with other types of cosmetic procedures. Talk to our Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa team to determine if collagen induction therapy should be part of your anti-aging plan. To get the best possible outcome from collagen induction therapy, it’s always best to choose a licensed professional—don’t try microneedling at home or simply type “microneedling near me” into a search bar and pick the nearest or cheapest result. Microneedling is a powerful and effective skin-rejuvenation option, so only a professional who is skilled and experienced should conduct the treatment. This helps to ensure that your procedure is done safely with minimal risks.
At Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa, experienced nurses and physician assistants perform Genius™ RF collagen induction therapy while licensed estheticians, nurses, and physician assistants perform SkinPen® microneedling, all overseen by Victoria A. Cirillo-Hyland, MD, a board-certified dermatologist.

In preparation for traditional or RF microneedling, patients should avoid direct and unprotected sun exposure. You may need to begin taking certain prescribed medications several days in advance of your session, and you will need to avoid non-prescribed blood thinners and anti-inflammatory agents, alcoholic beverages, and certain vitamins and supplements. You will also need to stop using topical retinoid products a week before. For your safety and best results, do not apply makeup, sunscreen, or any skincare products, and be sure to remove all jewelry, including body piercings, before your visit. Before our RF microneedling treatments, we also recommend filling any prescriptions and purchasing distilled water and soft washcloths.
There are few risks associated with microneedling, and minimal recovery time is required. Patients can go back to their typical daily activities right away. Any side effects from traditional microneedling with SkinPen® typically resolve within a few days, but there may be slightly more downtime for RF microneedling. Sun protection will help you to preserve optimal results-a hat and sunscreen are recommended following a collagen induction treatment.
Patients will soon see improvements in their skin, as well as continued benefits in the following weeks as collagen levels gradually increase.
To maintain the most aesthetically pleasing results without aggravating your skin, we recommend gentle skincare products following a treatment session. Topical hyaluronic acid products can help to accelerate healing and enhance the effects.
At Cirillo Cosmetic, we understand that every patient has unique skin concerns they would like to address. Thus, we offer many state-of-the-art cosmetic dermatology options for facial skin rejuvenation, including lasers, fillers and BOTOX®, medical-grade chemical peels, microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, radiofrequency, and ultrasound.
PRP is a treatment that makes use of the platelet-rich portion of a patient’s blood. Blood is drawn from the patient, then spun down in a centrifuge. The resulting platelet-rich layer is either injected or applied topically to the skin. PRP is rich in growth factors, which induce changes in the skin, resulting in a more youthful look. On its own, it can be a powerful option for anyone looking for skin rejuvenation. When paired with microneedling, it can be especially effective.
