LATISSE™ is the latest innovation for eyelashes, but it certainly isn’t the first. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks used eye paint and make-up to define eyes, lashes and brows to protect against the sun and the evil eye! During the Renaissance, aristocracy raised the desire for lush alluring eyelashes to a new level. Mascaras were homemade of ashes and castor oil. The first mascara was invented in 1840 by Eugene Rimmel, a London perfumer. In 1913, Maybelline was born but most didn’t realize its main ingredient was Vaseline. The last major advancement came in 1989 with MaxFactor and its No Color Mascara. In 2009, LATISSE™ vaulted onto the scene as the first FDA-approved prescription treatment to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker.
According to dermatologist Victoria A. Cirillo-Hyland, MD, “LATISSE™ is believed to affect the growth phase of the eyelash hair cycle in two ways: first, it increases the length of this phase; and second, it increases the number of hairs in this growth phase.” The FDA reviewed clinical study results to verify the identity, potency, purity and stability of the ingredients, and demonstrated that the product is safe and effective for its intended use if used as prescribed.
Physicians must prescribe LATISSE™. Manufacturer Allergan encourages you to locate a core physician who understands the science of eyelash growth cycles. At Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa, Dr. Cirillo-Hyland will evaluate your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate. For instance, if you have irritated upper eyelid skin or if you are using medication for elevated eye pressure, you may not be a candidate.
LATISSE™ solution is packaged as a 3 mL bottle of solution with 60 accompanying sterile, disposable applicators. The recommended dosage is one application nightly to the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes. You should only use the FDA-approved sterile applicators to apply LATISSE™. The applicators have been designed and manufactured to meet FDA standards, and ensure that the correct dose of LATISSE™ is applied. This will maximize effectiveness and safety.
Victoria A. Cirillo-Hyland, MD remarks, “full results are achieved after 16 weeks, with lashes 18% darker, 25% longer and 106% thicker. The before/after results are remarkable.”
