Everyone from your best friend to your mother is talking about injectable fillers. Everyone is considering getting them, but there are so many. Which one is the perfect filler for you?
The answer, according to Rosemont dermatologist, Victoria A. Cirillo-Hyland, M.D. is “D. All of the Above; it depends on what aging issue you are trying to correct.”
Dr. Cirillo-Hyland explains, “fillers help to correct two aging processes:
Filling in individual wrinkles and lines, and
Restoring volume to areas that have lost the fullness of youth.”
Dr. Cirillo-Hyland notes that a baby has the cherubic face of an “inflated beach ball but as time progresses, the beach ball deflates.” She always gives her patients a mirror and asks them, “What are you looking to improve?” Dr. Cirillo-Hyland then discusses which filler(s) would be best to achieve the desired result.
Although each treatment decision is unique to a patient’s skin type and aging issue, Dr. Cirillo-Hyland routinely uses the following fillers:
- Collagen (Cosmoderm)
- Collagen (Cosmoplast)
- Hyaluronic acid fillers (Restylane, Juvederm)
Collagen lasts about three to four months and hyaluronic acid fillers last up to six months or longer.
Sculptra® and Radiesse® are members of a new exciting class of fillers which last years. They both stimulate your body’s production of collagen by “turning on your own collagen factories”. Furthermore, Radiesse® additionally provides immediate filler correction similar to the hyaluronic acid fillers. Dr. Cirillo-Hyland notes that she no longer thinks of just correcting lines or wrinkles when using Sculptra® and Radiesse®, but of recreating a youthful face by adding back volume to sculpt the face.
Whichever filler(s) you choose, make sure you find a qualified physician who is properly trained in the technique required for the selected filler. It’s your face, don’t be afraid to ask questions.
