Hair loss is a common and often distressing problem for both men and women. According to The American Academy of Dermatology, hereditary hair loss affects about 30 million women and 50 million men in the United States
Androgenetic alopecia/hair loss is characterized by a decrease in the density and diameter of the hair and miniaturization of the hair follicle. It is a progressive disorder if left untreated, and can result in significant balding. Most patients present complaints of a receding hairline as well as loss of hair on the top of the scalp. PRP hair restoration at the Bryn Mawr, Newtown Square, and Philadelphia-area practice Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa aims to reverse these effects, slowing the rate of hair loss and encouraging hair regrowth.

What Causes Hair Loss?
The average person can lose 50 to 100 hairs per day. Hair loss becomes a medical issue when bald patches and/or excessive thinning occurs.
There are many causes of hair loss. Women may notice hair loss after giving birth. Excessive stress can cause sudden hair loss, as can some diseases and medical treatments. Even hair care practices, such as coloring, perming, or straightening, can be factors in hair loss.
Androgenic alopecia affects up to 50 percent of Caucasian individuals by age 50 and almost 50 percent of women over their lifetime. The prevalence of female pattern hair loss appears to advance with age and onset of menopause: 12 percent of women first develop clinically detectable female pattern hair loss by age 29; 25 percent by age 49; and more than 80 percent by age 60. This type of hair loss can be inherited from either the mother’s or the father’s side of the family. Male pattern hair loss is typically characterized by a receding hairline at the temples and thinning of the vertex of the scalp. Affected women may present as thinning and widening of the midline part, diffuse thinning, and frontal and temporal hair thinning. Typically, the earlier hair loss begins, the more severe it will become.
Hair restoration with PRP can slow the progression of androgenic alopecia and encourage new hair growth. PRP therapy is well-suited for androgenic alopecia patients who would like to receive a natural and non-surgical method of hair restoration.

How Does PRP Hair Restoration Work?
In all cases, the earlier treatment begins, the better the results. Hair restoration becomes harder to achieve as the loss of hair progresses.
*Individual patient results may vary.
Cirillo Cosmetic Dermatology Spa offers PRP therapy, one of the safest and most effective hair restoration treatments available. While the utilization of PRP for the specific purpose of hair restoration is not FDA-approved, the Eclipse PRP system used at our Spa is cleared by the FDA. Hair restoration using PRP is an innovative, safe, and minimally invasive therapy. PRP, short for Platelet-Rich Plasma, has become a popular alternative to hair transplants in both women and men. PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood and has no chemicals added to it, making the likelihood of complications minimal.
Our hair restoration specialists apply topical numbing cream to the targeted areas before treatment to make your experience as comfortable as possible.
The procedure involves drawing your blood and spinning the blood in a centrifuge to separate out the platelet rich component. The PRP is then carefully injected into the thinning and/or balding areas.
The hair follicles benefit from the proteins and growth factors released by the PRP once it is injected into the scalp. PRP encourages the hair growth cycle to move from the resting/telogen phase into the growing/anagen phase, and also prolongs the duration of the growing anagen phase.
Current recommendations for PRP hair restoration are four treatments spaced monthly, and maintenance treatments every three to six months thereafter. Patients have seen improvement after one treatment. However, we recommend waiting until after your fourth treatment to see the best results. Like any procedure, results may vary between individuals. During your consultation, an information sheet containing detailed pre- and post-care instructions will be provided to you.
